A Las Vegas man died in a rollover crash in the southwest valley area, according to Metro police sources. Vegas police responded to a call about a single rollover vehicle crash where they found the driver dead at the scene. The 47-year-old man was the sole occupant of a 2013 Nissan. The crash took place at Desert Inn and Durango and shut down traffic on Durango for some time as police investigated and cleaned up from the crash. Authorities have not yet released any information on how the crash may have occurred. An investigation continues to determine the cause of the accident.
ROLLOVER ACCIDENTS: DEADLY CRASHES
Rollover accidents are not as common as some other types of crashes but they are deadly or cause serious injury far more often. There is no such thing as a "minor" rollover crash. According to recent statistics, there are more than 6 million car accidents in the United States each year. About 38,000 of these are fatal and 2.9 million cause injury. While rollover crashes account for a far smaller number of accidents than rear-end collisions, for example, they are much more deadly. ROLLOVER CRASHES AND PERSONAL INJURY
Many people assume that if a driver's car rolls over he or she must have been at fault. While this is true in some cases it is certainly not true in all cases. There are many reasons a driver could be involved in a rollover crash that are not solely due to driver error, such as:
- One car cuts of another illegally, causing the driver to slam on brakes. Sudden braking causes the driver to lose control, and striking a rock or other object in the road could lead to rollover.
- Ice, snow or rain causes slippery surfaces cause the driver to lose control.
- The vehicle itself is inherently unsafe.
