High Road Fatalities In Nevada Affecting Insurance Rates

During the course of this year, 178 people have lost their lives on Nevada roads. Drivers from Las Vegas are the most likely to cause an accident when compared to the rest of the state, but deaths have occurred in all locations, not just in the "big city," leading to several repercussions for Nevada drivers, including higher insurance premiums. Of course, the most important factor in any road accident is the impact on the victim and his or her family.

However, everyone is affected when insurance rates goes up. Insurance companies rely on accident and claim information to determine their rates. This means drivers in cities like Las Vegas, which have an extremely high number of accidents, will have significantly higher insurance rates. With such a high number of collisions, the number of serious or fatal injuries also goes up. This in turn pushes up the cost of insurance in the area.

STATISTICS

According to a survey, drivers from Las Vegas are perceived as being among the most unsafe in the country. Factors taken into account in the survey included population density, distracted driving and weather conditions. A very high proportion of reported accidents in Las Vegas occur when those driving are travelling at speeds less than 35 miles per hour. Experts believe that the majority of these are due to the fact that people pay less attention when travelling at slower speeds.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 30,800 fatal automobile accidents in Nevada in 2012. While this number has decreased since, it is still far higher than the national average. All of this means that insurance companies can justify higher rates for drivers in Nevada. While Nevada's average $1,388 per year is lower than the national average of $1,503, it is still very high for such a sparsely populated state, especially when compared to states like New York, whose average is only $1,173.
