Can Green Tea Help Prevent Spinal Injury?

The Neural Regeneration Research Journal reports that drinking green tea may protect the body from a spinal cord injury. Chinese researchers believe that green tea has polyphenols, which protect neurons from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can cause serious damage such as lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation and DNA damage. The theory was tested on rats, and the results show that the green tea extract reduces oxidative stress and reduces neuronal apoptosis. This research may hold promise for the development of post-spinal cord injury and shows that is may be possible to regenerate neurons after the injury. Green tea has many other positive effects, such as fighting cancer, reducing cholesterol, controlling diabetes, boosting immunity, preventing tooth decay, treating depression and blood pressure and increasing metabolism. However, there is still debate on how much green tea actually results in health gains. If you are considering drinking green tea more often, contact your physician to discuss a green tea supplement.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 200,000 people in the United States are currently diagnosed with a spinal cord injury. Every year 12,000 to 20,000 new patients are diagnosed. A spinal cord injury occurs when the spinal column is damaged due to an accident. The spinal cord is the pathway for the essential bundle of nerves that extends from the brain to the rest of the body. Those diagnosed with a spinal cord injury may be at risk for potential neurological impairments. An injury can cause permanent change in strength, sensation and bodily functions. According to the Mayo Clinic, scientists are optimistic that research can make advances in repairing spinal cord injuries, and studies are continually being performed to find a way to lessen the damage of these terrible injuries. Each year, a patient with SCI pays $15,000 to $30,000 in medical costs. The four most common causes of spinal cord injuries are motor vehicle accidents, falls, violence and sports. Spinal cord injuries are expensive, life-changing and often permanent in their results. Therefore, it is very important that anyone who suffers a spinal cord injury seek payment of damages to ensure that funds are available to pay for continued care for life.
