Motorcycle vs. Car Accidents: Statistics

Motorcycle vs. Car Accidents: Statistics

Because motorcycles do not provide as much protection as cars do, motorcycle accidents are more dangerous, leading to severe injuries and even death. However, more people lose their lives in car accidents annually. Read on to find out about the factors and statistics going into these two types of accidents.

Fatal Car and Motorcycle Accidents in Nevada

The State of Nevada strives to keep its citizens and visitors safe on the roads. Still, road users can be reckless and cause others harm, which can result in serious and fatal injuries.

The following 2019 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows how many car occupants lost their lives, how it happened, and who they were:

  • 304 fatalities in total
  • 92 accidents due to alcohol
  • 87 accidents due to speeding
  • 31 fatalities under the age of 21
  • 191 accidents in urban areas
  • 111 accidents in rural areas

Nevada Motorcycle Accidents

The NHTSA further cites motorcycle accident statistics in comparison to car accidents:

  • 56 total fatalities
  • 15 fatalities for people aged 20 to 29 (the highest death rate of the age groups)

Clark County in Nevada had the highest rate of all fatal traffic accidents for five consecutive years.

When and Where Crashes Usually Happen in the U.S.

According to the NHTSA, 60% of fatal motorcycle accidents occur in urban areas, as opposed to 40% in rural areas.

It is no surprise that the most common time that deadly motorcycle crashes happen during the week is from 3 pm to 6 pm: rush hour. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), nearly 25% of motorcyclists lose their life at this time. The riskiest time for motorcyclists to go out on the weekend is between 6 pm and 9 pm, making up about 24% of accidents during that time.

Although the lowest number is unknown, III data suggests that the fewest deadly accidents that occur during the week are from 3 am to 6 am, making up just over 3% of the total crashes. On the weekend, the lowest rate is a little later from 6 am to 9 am with a 2.8% fatality rate.

Car accidents

The National Safety Council (NSC) affirms that Saturdays from 8:00 to 11:59 PM is the most common time for deadly car accidents to occur during the spring and summer. Fatal car accidents also seem to occur most frequently on the weekends.

Who Causes Car and Motorcycle Accidents in the U.S.?

According to the III, in 2018 almost 37,000 males were involved in fatal car crashes, along with about 13,000 females. People aged 25 to 34 died in car accidents more than any other group at 17.7%, whereas the age group that ranked the lowest was 16 to 20 years old at 5.3%.

The NHTSA details that motorcyclists over 59 years old accounted for the greatest number of fatal motorcycle accidents in Nevada in 2018.

What These Accidents Have in Common

According to the III, speeding is a leading reason for both motorcycle and car accidents. In 2018, 16.7% of motorcycle and car accidents were caused by speeding—both leading to fatalities.

Alcohol-Impaired Driving Accidents In The U.S.

Operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol heightens the risk of an accident because the driver might compromise their judgment and have blurred vision. According to 2018 data from the III, there were over 20,100 fatal car accidents and 5,1000 motorcycle accidents involving alcohol impairment.

However, 25% of motorcyclists had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of over 0.08 in motorcycle accidents, as opposed to 21% of car drivers involved in a motor vehicle crash.

Of these deadly accidents caused by a high BAC, over 24,000 car occupants lost their lives, in addition to nearly 5,000 motorcyclists.
