RED LIGHT VIOLATIONS & DISTRACTED DRIVING

The National Coalition for Safer Roads (NCSR) and FocusDriven, two advocacy groups that are working to continue to raise distracted driving awareness, studied the connection between running red lights and distracted driving. The study examined 118 different intersections in 19 different cities over a period of three months — each of these intersections was equipped with red-light safety cameras.

The study found that approximately 12 percent of violating drivers were distracted when running the light. However, this was not the most shocking result of the study. When the analysis was expanded to incorporate the rest of the United States, more than 7.3 million intersection violations occurred in a single year because of distracted driving.

These findings should influence our behavior because mistakes in an intersection can be extremely dangerous. Not only do intersections tend to draw crowds, but the limited space and limited escape options available mean that one driver making a mistake can quickly lead to total disaster. If millions of people are not paying attention as they drive through intersections, it goes a long way towards explaining just how dangerous distracted driving is for anyone on the roads at any given time.

TEEN DRIVERS & DISTRACTED DRIVING

Every parent of a teenager at least silently dreads the day that he or she gets a driver’s license for obvious reasons. While it will be more convenient to not have to provide a child with constant transportation, fear and anxiety creep into everyone’s consciousness when they see a child drive off in a vehicle. That’s because adults tend to understand the dangers associated with cars, trucks, and SUVs on a deeper level than teens who are mostly just excited to be able to drive for themselves.

Unfortunately, that lack of perspective on the seriousness of driving is something that has always led to the development of bad habits by teen drivers. This is one of the many reasons that teens cost more to insure than members of other age groups.

In a government survey of 8,000 high school students who were at least 16 years of age, more than 44 percent of respondents admitted that the read and sent text messages while driving within the last 30 days. In addition, 25 percent of respondents admitted to taking part in this behavior at least once every day. Distracted driving is clearly an issue and is also clearly not going to stop anytime soon.
